Smith, Gordon A.

SMITH, Gordon Albert –

On Wednesday, February 6, 2019, in his 88th year. Devoted husband of 65 years to Mae Smith (nee Lasby). Loving father of Carl Smith (Brenda) of Guelph, Linda Rock (Mike) of Brandon, Manitoba, and Rev. Greg Smith (Sheree Anderson) of Kitchener. Proud grandfather of Jennifer (Adam), Christine (James), Valerie (Steve), Jason, Jordan (Nicole), and Emily and great grandfather of Liam, Emma, Hunter, Audrey, Madison, Peyton, Catherine, Scott, Paisley, Brighton, Lennon and Archer. Predeceased by his parents, Les and Cora Smith of Flesherton, Ontario. Sadly missed by his brothers and sister, Neil Smith of Hamilton, Marion Stead of Toronto, Jim Smith (Gloria) of Flesherton and by his many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Gord grew up on a small farm in Grey County. He attended a one room school house and went out to work at an early age. One of his first jobs off the farm was as a cook in a hydro camp at the age of 14. Leaving home at 16, his early working life was constant and quite varied. He eventually attended the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph where he studied dairy science. It was in Guelph that he met Mae. They were married in October 1953, just a few months after they first saw each other at a United Co-op Valentines dance.

After earning his papers as a stationary engineer, he began working in that field. He was employed for many years in the powerhouse of the Imperial Tobacco Company, spending his last decade there as Chief Engineer. A past President of the Refrigeration Service Engineers of Canada, Gord was always interested in acquiring new skills and his love of learning never ceased. Inventive and creative, he was full of ideas which he often brought to reality with his technical knowledge and ability.

Gord had a love of the outdoors and was always willing to share his knowledge, especially with kids and youngsters. He was a long-time elder of Westminster-St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Guelph and a member of the Board of Managers.

In his last years, Gord resided at Riverside Glen Retirement Home, where he is fondly remembered. Up to his final days, he kept staff busy assisting him with his numerous projects and ideas. He visited Mae faithfully, spending his last evening with her in the Long Term Care wing of the facility. He was, in the words of a senior staff member, "one of a kind".

Gord's family will receive friends at the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph on Monday, February 11 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, February 12 at 11:00 am. Reception to follow. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

A tree will be planted in memory of Gordon A. Smith in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest, University of Guelph Arboretum. Dedication service, Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 2:30 pm.
