MACHAT, Karl Franz - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved father, Karl, on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, in his 95th year, at West Park Long Term Care Centre, in Toronto, Ontario.
He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Erika, and their two children Renee (Paul) and Karl, Jr. (Peggy).
After active service in World War II, which resulted in the amputation of his left foot, and with both of his parents deceased, Karl left his native Vienna, Austria, in 1956, to embark on a new life in Canada. Landing by ship in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Karl made his way to Toronto to begin life anew. Little did he know that, within a few short years, he would meet his wife-to-be, also from Vienna.
Karl loved music—particularly jazz, classical and opera--and he passed this love on to his children. He was also a huge movie buff and his ability to recall details such as titles, actors and release dates of films he enjoyed, even decades later, was impressive. Karl enjoyed watching sports of all kinds on TV, especially soccer, having played “the beautiful game” in his youth.
A quiet, unassuming man, Karl loved being at home with his family and enjoyed life regardless of what it threw at him. While he would have regarded his life as unremarkable, Karl was a truly amazing person. We are blessed to have known him and have him in our lives for as long as we did. We miss our Daddy and Papa dearly.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Karl’s life will take place at a later date, when it is safe, once again, for us to gather together.
