Traditional Funeral Service
Traditional funeral services generally include:
Visitation
Sometimes called a viewing or wake. Typically a casket (or rental casket) is present, and guests are welcome to pay their respects to the deceased and offer condolences to the family. Visitations generally occur prior to the funeral service.
Funeral Service
A funeral service generally takes place at the funeral home, a religious institution, or at graveside. Music, eulogies, poems and passages can all be a part of the event.
Committal
If the casket is being buried, this would be the procession to the cemetery and the service at graveside. If cremation is taking place following a funeral service, the committal can take place at a later date.
Reception
Many choose to host a luncheon following the service or committal. Often, this is a less formal time for guests and family to share memories and refreshments.
