Did You Know?

Wall-Custance Funeral Home has been planting trees in partnership with the University of Guelph since 1989. Together through our Memorial Forest program, we’ve planted more than 18,000 trees.

Wall-Custance Memorial Forest Program

The Wall-Custance Memorial Forest program provides an opportunity to commemorate the life of a loved one in a special way; by planting a tree — a living memorial. The Memorial Forest is a living laboratory, a haven for our natural wildlife and a commitment to the wellbeing of future generations.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic barred us from gathering together for the annual tree dedication service. To continue the important tradition of remembrance and new growth, The Arboretum and the Wall-Custance Funeral Home and Chapel collaborated to create a video documenting the planting of this year’s tree: an elm sapling from our Elm Recovery Project. Families, friends, and loved ones can watch the journey of the sapling from our Henry Kock Propagation Centre to its new home in the Memorial Forest. Watch the 2020 video below:

Richard Maciesza (1930 – 2021)

Richard Maciesza passed away peacefully at University Hospital in London, Ontario on Saturday, October 16, 2021.  Richard was in his 92nd year and lived a very full life.

Richard was born in Izabelin, Poland.  His father was the late Waclaw Maciesza who was killed in World War II at a very young age.   He and his mother the late Wanda Maciesza (Thumm) then immigrated to Canada in 1949 where he married his lifelong sweetheart Stella Maciesza (Lasek) in 1961.  In April 2021 they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary together.   Richard’s career as an exhibit builder included 22 years with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food located at the University of Guelph.

Richard was an amazing inspiration and role model to his two sons, Rick (Zonya) Maciesza from Grand Bend and Steve (Russell) Maciesza of London.  He was so very proud of his three grand children, Lucas (Amanda) Maciesza, Mikayla (Adam) Schraeder, Kristy (Beau) Banerjee and six great grand children Ava, Myah, Arlo, Ariana, Raelyn and Richard.

Richard was a humble, selfless, hard working and caring man who always put his family first.  He had a very strong Christian faith and was always concerned about others.  He was talented beyond measure and gifted in so many areas of his life, leaving his family with a legacy that will last a lifetime.  Richard was a true inspiration to all who knew him and will be deeply missed.

The family would like to thank the caring doctors and nurses at the Acute Stroke Unit at University Hospital in London, Ontario along with the many friends for their love and support over the years.

RICHES, Bill –

Bill Riches passed away on the morning of October 12th, 2021. He died with the love of his family surrounding him and the support and care of the staff at Riverside Glen. Bill will be forever loved and missed by his wife Judy and his four children, Aaron, Miriam, Leah and Jacob, his daughter-in-law Melissa, and his sons-in-law Ondrej and Ryan. He was predeceased by his parents John and Marjorie Riches, and his siblings Anne, David and Joan.

Bill was born in Geraldton, Ontario in 1942 and grew up in Port Arthur. He had a quick wit and a knack for humorous sayings. His childhood summers were spent at Loon Lake where he got into every possible misadventure, jumping onto moving trains, living all summer in the same bathing suit, playing baseball with beehives and generally “gettin’ up to no good.” These stories of his childhood were endless entertainment for his children and grandchildren. In his adult years this sense of adventure translated into a profound love of the outdoors and a quiet love of nature. What animated Bill’s life above all was loyalty to his family, gratitude for lifelong friendships and openness to connecting with anyone he bumped into.

In his retirement Bill spent countless hours crafting beautiful wood pieces, hitting the slopes with his children and grandchildren, hiking the Bruce Trail with Judy, and tending to his garden. He enjoyed volunteering at the Welcome In Drop in Center, Wyndham House, and Hospice Wellington; all organizations whose work he so valued. His retirement was also filled with the delight of his 10 grandchildren: Luka, Malin, Emma, Basil, Esa, Edith, Isabel, Lucia, Carmen and Gregorio.  As the impact of his dementia progressed he continued to find joy in time spent with them.

Arrangements entrusted to the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers his family welcomes donations to the Welcome In Drop in Center, Wyndham House, or Hospice Wellington.

A tree will be planted in memory of F. William (Bill) Riches in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
