CUMMINGS, David J. – With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of David J. Cummings, after a lengthy battle with lung cancer, on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the age of 77.
Born on July 12, 1947, David built a life defined by hard work, perseverance, and a strong sense of responsibility. He spent many years driving truck, covering countless miles and facing every challenge the road had to offer. He took great pride in his work. He had many stories from the road, often shared with a grin and a chuckle about his days under the CB handle “Huggy Bear”.
In 1967, David married Shirley (nee Bilton), and together they built a family grounded in commitment and resilience. He was the father of Kim (Jamie) McDougall and Sheri (Brent) Nieson and took pride in seeing the lives they built.
While David could be a bit rough around the edges, he had a deep and abiding love for his family – especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His face would light up with their presence and they brought out a softer side of him that those closest to him cherished.
He was a proud grandfather to David (Julie) McDougall, Carly (Shane) Kolpean and Bryce McDougall and adoring great-grandfather to Colton, Cayge and Corbin Kolpean and Parker McDougall. He was predeceased by his great-granddaughter, Kinley Kolpean, who held a special place in his heart.
David is also survived by his brother, Bill (Bette) Cummings and Nancy (the late Carl) Crewson as well as many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. He was predeceased by his parents, Helen and Edward Cummings and parents-in-law, Cecil and Eva Bilton.
Those who knew David will remember a man who didn’t sugarcoat things, believed in hard work and loved his family fiercely in his own way. His legacy lives on in the stories told around kitchen tables, the laughter of great-grandkids and the steady values he passed down.
At David’s request, a private family gathering will be held in his memory. Arrangements entrusted to the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Wellington. We also invite you to honour him with a quiet moment, a story shared, or time spent with those you love.
A tree will be planted in memory of David J. Cummings in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
