BEWLEY, J. Derek – 1943-2023
Proud father of Alex and Janette, brother to Hilary in Australia and delightfully professorial to his grandchildren Maya, Birch, Elliot, Tate, Saxon, Lex and Jesse.
He was a many-lettered seed scientist, book author and inspiring teacher to generations of students. Special thanks to all caregivers in Guelph, the Billies, dear friends and neighbours, and for the inspiring support of his research colleagues and post-doc students worldwide, many of who have contributed significantly to seed science throughout their careers. Succumbed to cancer on February 24 after a prolonged battle, diligently wielding his red editing pen until the end.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel, 206 Norfolk Street, Guelph, ON, Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the Wall-Custance Family Reception Centre. Arrangements entrusted to the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com.
Instead of flowers, donations to the Sick Kids Foundation or Guelph General Hospital are welcome. We are grateful that he was a part of our lives. Scientific In Memoriam to be published in ASPB and CSPB. In scientia fidimus.
A tree will be planted in memory of J. Derek Bewley in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.

• Hand-sanitizer is available in all high-traffic areas.
• Maintenance of physical distancing, both during visitations and services, and during our meetings with families.
• Ongoing communications with those that we serve to ensure that they are aware of the current Covid-19 status of our municipality and the accompanying guidelines.
We continue to rely on the advice provided by health experts and are committed to doing all we can to keep our community healthy.
