Providing Cremation and Funeral Services to Guelph and Area since 1941.
LAIRD, James Donald (Don) – With broken hearts we are greatly saddened to announce the sudden passing of Don Laird on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the age of 77.
Don was the loving husband of Faith (Butcher) for 38 years and the beloved father to Rob (Flora). He was adored by his two grandsons, Alex and Marc who were shining stars in his eyes. Don will be dearly cherished by his older brother Allan (Jan). He is also survived by extended family and many close friends who are too many to mention.
Predeceased by his parents Elma and John Laird.
Don teamed up with his dear friend, Don Schilling, for over 30 years to form the accounting partnership of Schilling & Laird, out of Preston. He loved his job as a CA and while working with his office staff, he garnered the respect of many clients, some evolving into lasting friendships.
His friendships have stood the test of time starting from his boyhood days as a cherished member of the “Mont Street Gang.” Don’s friendships continued to build throughout his life with his baseball teammates, curling buddies and cottage and VBA neighbours. Don had a sharp wit and a hilarious sense of humour that left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He was always smiling and was normally the instigator of many laughs. Don cared deeply for his family and lived his life looking forward to his next adventure. He was thoughtful in his approach to all his endeavors and kind beyond measure, straight through to his heart.
Don was a natural and amazing athlete, both on the curling sheet and baseball diamond. He competed for many years in various bonspiels and tournaments that provided him with amusing stories, fun experiences and priceless memories.
For close to 40 years, anyone could readily find Don relaxing on his deck at his cottage, basking in the glory of the sunsets. It was a peaceful retreat, where the doors were always open to family and friends. We hope that when you look at the beautiful colours of the next sunset, you remember Don smiling, and you treasure his warmth and endless kindness. He truly was a remarkable man and will be forever in our hearts.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph, on Friday, January 27 from 2:00-4:00pm, 6:00-8:00pm and one hour prior to the service on Saturday, January 28 from 1:00-2:00pm. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, January 28 at 2:00pm. Reception to follow in the Wall-Custance Family Reception Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bruce Trail Conservancy, St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener or the Guelph General Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
