Pearl (Margaret) Robinson Carter
May 29, 1932 – April 2, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Pearl Robinson on April 2nd, 2025 at St Joseph’s Health Centre, Palliative Care in Guelph. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years Jim Robinson and her second husband Ted Carter.
Pearl lived an extraordinary 92 year journey, marked by compassion, adventure and unwavering kindness.
She was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her father passed away just before World War 2 began, leaving her mother Christina Steen, to raise Pearl and her siblings through the war and after. Pearl would often tell the stories of those times, including being evacuated to the countryside on two occasions. Despite what must have been very difficult times she had a very happy childhood and was part of a very close and loving family.
In 1953 she emigrated to Canada to join her soon to be husband Jim in Guelph. Missing her family she returned to Ireland where her first son was born. She returned to Guelph and lived here the rest of her life. In Canada she made many friends and lived a very full life. She worked at Biltmore Hats for many years. She then worked at Omark and various Variety Stores including Quik Shop and Edinburgh Road Variety. She loved meeting all the regular patrons and chatting with them.
She was a devoted mother, stepmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and grandmother who brought immeasurable joy, unconditional love and boundless support to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It goes without saying that Pearl was close to her countless friends and neighbours. She had time and love for everyone who walked through her door and usually treated them to some home made treats.
Pearls’s life was marked by many achievements including the Order of Niagara from the Anglican Diocese and the Paul Harris Fellowship award by the Rotary Club of Guelph for her fundraising efforts, including her longstanding support of Hospice Wellington.
She was a dedicated volunteer and enthusiastic member of the All Saints Lutheran Anglican Church (and previously prior to merging, St David’s and St Patrick’s Anglican Church). She was a beloved member of her church and was well known for her organizing skills and home baking which made any event successful. She was also very successful at fundraising in support of her church and community.
Pearl was the loving mother of Jim (Eda) Robinson, Glenn (the late Illana) Robinson. Grandmother of Elyse and Grant (Karly) Robinson, remembered by their Mom Jeannie Robinson and great grandmother to Alice and Jax. She was also the loving stepmother to Ken Carter, Carole (Ed) Mozuraitis, Karen (Stuart) Ferrie d-2022. Tom (Tracey) Carter, Susan Carter and Lynda (Tom) Mace. She was the cherished grandmother in her second marriage to sixteen grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren . She was a special mum and grandma to Gary and Carrol Sood and family, and to Victoria Craig (Gord), and her son Matthew Winn.
Predeceased by her siblings Ella (Jim) Reid, Ruby (Bertie) Trimble, Andrew Steen, William Steen, Irene Steen and Molly (Dennis) Grattan. She is survived by her sister Sadie (Andy) Glover. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Steve (PSW), Dr’s Merserau and Morris for their care and support; as well the dedicated staff at the General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
Pearl’s true legacy was in the lives she touched throughout her life.
