Mary Jo Alyea
Date of Death: November 15, 2021

ALYEA, Mary Jo (Farnsworth) –

It is with profound sadness that her family announce the peaceful passing of Mary Jo on November 15, 2021 at Hospice Wellington after a long courageous struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Beloved wife, companion and best friend of Elm Alyea. Treasured mother of Amy (Derek) and Holly (Bruce). Proud grandmother of Parker, Alex, Sullivan, Griffin and Samaya. Dear sister-in-law of Shirley and George Post and Mel (d. 2019) and Fran (d. 2014) Alyea. Dear cousin of Nancy Porz, Alan Campney (d. 1999), Barbara Jane Myles and Joanie MacPhee. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Frank Farnsworth (d. 1963) and Jo Farnsworth (d. 1988) of Belleville. Beloved sister of Dennis Farnsworth (d. 2000) (Noreen, Jean).

Mary Jo graduated from BCIVS in Belleville in 1957 and was still close friends with several of her classmates. After earning her B.A. (Arts) at Queen’s in 1960, she attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston, Mass. Mary Jo then worked in secretarial positions in Toronto, London, ON, London, UK, and Columbus, Ohio while Elm finished his education. After moving to Guelph and then embracing motherhood for 15 years, Mary Jo worked as a legal assistant in the law firm of Hugh Guthrie for 12 years before retiring in 1998.

Mary Jo will be remembered for her compassion, kindness, sense of humour, integrity, and the high standards she set for herself and those she loved. She was a phenomenal cook and hostess, and many will fondly recall her cheesecakes. Most of all, she will be remembered for the deep love she had for her husband, children and grandchildren. To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.

The family acknowledges with gratitude the compassionate care of Dr. Renee Beland, and PSWs Chona, Ellen and Mallory over the last two years.

At Mary Jo’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Canada, Hospice Wellington or a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Condolences may be sent to the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel in Guelph via the funeral home website at wallcustance.com.

A tree will be planted in memory of Mary Jo Alyea in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
