Memorial services
A Memorial Service can be very similar to traditional funeral services, with the distinction that no casket is present. Sometimes the cremated remains are present at the memorial service, and sometimes the deceased is commemorated with photos and keepsakes. Just as with a traditional funeral, memorial services can include a Visitation, a Committal and/or a Reception. A memorial service can be held weeks or even months after the death.
A memorial service can be held in a religious institution, the funeral home, a community hall, or anywhere that the family chooses. Again, music, eulogies, poems and passages can be included in the service.
Celebration of Life
A Celebration of Life can be as unique as the life lived. Generally, cremation takes place prior to the celebration and the event can be held in any timeframe the family prefers. A celebration of life can be held at the funeral home or alternate location. Often celebrations of life do not include a formal service component, but rather an informal gathering where friends and loved ones can share stories. Sometimes a celebration of life will also include refreshments, sometimes a time for public remarks – there is no one way to celebrate a life, so let your memories of your loved one be your guide.
Regardless of the type of service chosen, some ways of personalizing the event could include:
- Using favourite music throughout the service
- Playing a DVD or digital slideshow
- Decorating the room with favourite flowers, keepsakes, and possessions
- Encouraging those very close to the deceased to write a personal letter or poem and placing it in the casket or urn
- Incorporating favourite poetry, hymns, or passages into the service, and having family members and children participate in the service in a meaningful way
End-of-life commemorative services create an atmosphere of friendship and openness which encourages people to talk, laugh, cry, and share – assisting those left behind in their journey of grief and healing.
