ROGERS, Mary Lorine – of Guelph passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Village of Arbour Trails on Monday, February 13, 2023 in her 88th year.
Mary is survived by her loving sons Andrew (Shelley) of Richmond, BC and Craig (Jane) of Guelph. Her grandchildren Sara, Samantha, Marlo and Luca brought her so much joy and left her beaming with pride.
She is pre-deceased by her siblings Nellie Romhanyi, John and William Hall.
Mary was born on June 13, 1935 to her parents Sophie and Peter Holubenko of Newcastle. After spending time in the Advertising Department at the Toronto Star, she pursued her true passion: teaching.
Mary attended Queen’s University, where she would meet her future husband and partner, George Ensley Rogers.
After marrying in 1960, they moved to Guelph – the city they raised their family and spent the rest of their lives in.
Mary was a born teacher and loved her time at Edward Johnson, Westwood and Ottawa Crescent Elementary Schools. She enjoyed running into former students and hearing where life had taken them.
Mary was an active member of St. George’s Church for 60 years and a former warden. She was also warden of St. Andrew’s Church in Howdenvale, where she and George bought the family cottage in 1982.
Mary was never one to sit around. Whether it was playing bridge, curling, sewing, meeting with sorority sisters, attending theatre productions or bargain hunting, you had to move fast to keep up with her. Especially if she was bargain hunting.
Despite multiple battles with cancer and more recently, dementia, she never lost her positive attitude. Now, she can rest and be reunited with her husband of 50 years.
Mary’s family would like to thank Dr. Manu Kaushik, Dr. Amy Tam and the entire teams at Guelph General Hospital, Grand River Regional Cancer Centre, LHIN and the Village of Arbour Trails for providing such excellent care.
Friends will be received at the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph on Sunday, February 19 from 1-4pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 99 Woolwich St, Guelph on Tuesday, February 21 at 11am. Reception to follow at Wall-Custance Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Guelph General Hospital Foundation, Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
A tree will be planted in memory of Mary L. Rogers in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
