SMITH, Dot Elizabeth – Our much-loved mom, Dot (Dorothy) Elizabeth Smith (nee Loney) passed away peacefully on March 8th, 2026 at the age of 93.
My Dad will tell you she was a ‘free spirit’; always pushing the envelope be it a figure skater in her youth, nurse by profession, ‘brisk’ sports car driver by choice, artist, impulsive ‘home decorator’ and her most valued role; life partner for 68 years with our dad. Dot’s higher calling was being this loving partner to Jim (James Alexander Smith) and caring mother to her three children Brandy (deceased) (Peter), Jim (Cyndy) and Tom (Gwen). Cherished ‘Nana’ to Alexx and Ryan (Alicia); Jarret; Katie (Bobby), Carly and Deanna. ‘Great Nana’ to James & Violet. ‘Auntie Dot’ to Mark, Maryann and John, sister of Bob Loney (deceased) Edna (deceased) and daughter of Dorothy and Oliver Loney (deceased).
Dot loved Jesus and her hospitality to those people God placed in her ‘circle’ reflected that deep love and her faith. Dot always had a flair for art and loved painting, quilting as well as many other artistic endeavors that turned our kitchen into a frequent ‘art studio’. But mom’s real ministry was helping those in her circle that needed help or who were dealing with medical challenges. It was usually behind the scenes whether it was getting meals, cleaning house or washing & styling hair. If you spent any time with Dot & Jim you’d know foremost, that loving each other well was a cherished commitment. And they loved each other well. She will be sadly missed but we know she is celebrating in heaven with Jesus and family, friends and her daughter Brandy.
A celebration of Dot’s life will be held at Guelph Bible Chapel on Saturday March 14th with visiting hours from 11am-12pm, a memorial service at 12pm, (to attend service remotely via livestream, click here) internment and reception to follow.
