FALLDING, Harold (Hal) Joseph – Died Thursday, August 23, 2007, at St. Joseph s Health Centre, Guelph, at age 84 of prostate cancer. Caring father of Marion Fallding of Chilliwack, B.C.; Ruth Fallding and her partner Mary Taves of Lindsay; and Helen Fallding and her partner Jo-Anne Cowen of Winnipeg. Loving grandfather of Katelin Kernaghan of Chilliwack. Predeceased in 2004 by his wife Margaret (Peggy) Hardy Fallding, a distinguished research scientist. Born in Australia, Harold was the youngest child of Fred and Bessie Fallding. Despite the family s struggles during the Depression, a first-rate education allowed Harold to fulfill his intellectual potential. After receiving his PhD at the Australian National University, Harold taught at the University of New South Wales, Rutgers University and the University of Waterloo, where he was founding chairman of sociology. After retirement, Harold was made distinguished professor emeritus, and his outstanding scholarship was also recognized by the Royal Society of Canada, which named him a fellow in 1980. Following cremation, Harold s remains will be interred in a private service at Memory Gardens on Highway 7 at Breslau. A public memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 27, 2007 at Harcourt Memorial United Church on Dean Avenue. A reception will follow in the church building.
