The family of Hughie Brake is deeply saddened to share that he passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at Hospice Wellington in Guelph, surrounded by the love of those closest to him. Hughie was in his 80th year. His gentle nature, steady presence, and unwavering devotion to family and friends leave a lasting imprint on all who were fortunate to know him.
Born to Brazil and Stella Brake, both predeceased, Hughie grew up in Trout River, Newfoundland, where a close-knit community shaped his lifelong values of loyalty, kindness, and hard work. He carried those values with him when he moved to Ontario, building a home filled with warmth, humour, and generosity.
A proud Newfoundlander, Hughie often spoke fondly of his childhood adventures—playing cowboys on the white rocks, stirring up harmless mischief, and spending countless hours on the soccer field and the brook playing hockey with friends and shooting pool at the local hangouts. Some of his happiest moments were spent around a card table, sharing laughter and friendly competition with family and friends. Like so many from Newfoundland, he spent many hours on the Atlantic fishing.
Hughie cherished time with his family above all else. He found joy in the simple moments—relaxing by the backyard pool, playing darts, walking the family dogs, and cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. He loved bowling, watching westerns, and proudly rooting for his favourite teams: the Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Bills, and New York Yankees. Hughie also had a deep love of the open road, and many of his happiest miles were spent driving to Newfoundland or Petawawa to be with the people who meant the most to him.
Hughie is survived by his beloved wife Mary, his partner in life and in quiet joy. Forever loved by his daughters Dawn (Sean) and Torry (Lance), and a proud grandfather to Alexis and Raegan, who brought him endless pride and happiness. His family was the center of his world, and he never missed a chance to support, encourage, or celebrate them.
He will be dearly missed by his siblings: sisters Marie (Pat—deceased) and Doreen (Mean), and brothers George (Donna), Charlie (Marion), Jerry (Karen), and Bruce (Vida—deceased). Hughie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, the Hann clan, and a large and loving extended family, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Predeceased by his father and mother-in-law Harvey and Stella Hann.
Hughie was known for his reliability, his quick wit, and his gift for making others feel comfortable. Whether sharing a story, offering a helping hand, or simply enjoying quiet company, he made every moment meaningful. His legacy lives on in the countless memories he created and the love he gave so freely.
Cremation has taken place. The family will gather at a later date in Newfoundland to honour Hughie’s life and share memories of the man they were blessed to call husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain a guiding light to all who loved him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many doctors and nurses who cared for Hughie with such dedication, and especially to the compassionate team at Hospice Wellington for their exceptional support and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Liver Canada or Hospice Wellington in Hughie’s memory.
