Irene Ponting King
June 23, 1933 – October 24, 2025
With deep sadness, the family of Irene King announces her peaceful passing at the age of 92.
Born in Belleville and raised in Toronto, Irene was predeceased by her parents Irene and Charles King, and her brother Rev. Charles King (Elizabeth). She is also predeceased by her beloved niece Lorraine Gillies. She is lovingly remembered by Lorraine’s husband Paul Gillies, and many cousins, including the Rankin and Mullin families
A graduate of the University of Toronto, Irene dedicated her career to teaching English, Latin and Greek – first in Orono and then at several Toronto high schools including Riverdale Collegiate. Irene continued her post-graduate education at Knox College, studying for a Master of Divinity. After retirement she served as a lay minister in several Toronto churches and remained an active member of Rosedale Presbyterian Church.
Irene had a lifelong passion for travel and genealogy, especially exploring the history of her cherished Rankin cousins. She also devoted many years to volunteering with Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT) and the Riverdale Collegiate Alumni Association.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Meighen Manor for their compassionate care of Irene in her later years.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rosedale Presbyterian Church would be appreciated.
Funeral services will be held at the Rosedale Presbyterian Church, 129 Mount Pleasant Rd., Toronto on Saturday, November 29th at 2:30pm. Refreshments to follow.
Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com.
