McDaid, Mary Magdalene
January 1, 1952 – November 20, 2025
It is with great sadness we share the sudden but peaceful passing of Mary at St. Joseph LTC with her family by her side.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Donald McDaid and Helen McDaid-Hassim, her brothers Joseph McDaid and Charles McDaid. Mary is survived by her sister Bernadette and her brother Michael. Mary will be sadly missed by her niece Lynda, her nephews: Lincoln, Douglas, Joseph Jr, Christopher, Conor, great nephew Noah and sister-in-law Susan McDaid-Earl
Mary was a niece, cousin, aunt, great aunt to many relatives across the country. Mary loved her role as the McDaid documentarian, she collected and cherished pictures and photo albums from family reunions and local family get-togethers because she cherished the people in them.
As an employee of Upsdell’s Food Mart for more than 25 years, Mary made friendships that continued until her passing.
Everyone who knew Mary heard all about her two great passions that developed over the years: Star Trek and Harry Potter. In these stories of far-off worlds and magical people, Mary found delight and joy that she shared with those around her.
Mary was a devoted and loving sister especially to our brother, Michael. Mary always said “Michael comes first”, and she lived by that – ensuring that Michael was loved everyday and he knew it. She was a fierce protector of those she loved – and they were many.
Mary always stood out among people. Growing up, Mary was the tallest of all the girl cousins she presented like the protector with her height and flaming red hair in braids to her waist. Mary will be remembered for her strong opinions and kind heart.
Steve, for many years you were a valued friend and supporter of Mary and she truly appreciated everything you did for her.
We would like to thank Nada, the nursing, housekeeping, and dietary teams at Magnolia Court West, St. Joseph’s LTC for their care and compassion not only during Mary’s final days but also for the duration of her time there. And, many thanks to chaplains Greta DeLongdhi and Simon Malonda. A special thank you to Father Duffy of the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate. Drs. Martin and Yi, and the nursing staff of 5th Floor West at the Guelph General Hospital.
Mary, you will be greatly missed. We loved you dearly. In your own words: “I was here and now I am gone”.
The family would appreciate Donations to St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation Guelph. Donations can also be made to Community Living Guelph Wellington, or by phone (519-824-2480 ask for Nancy Underwood).
